We are a historic wine cellar in the heart of Maribor, stretching over more than 2 kilometers beneath the city. We are also one of the largest and oldest traditional wine cellars in Europe. Our mission is to preserve and maintain the rich tradition of viticulture, winemaking, and trade, continuing the story that began long ago. Guided tours and tastings of premium wines are available daily. Our winemaking tradition dates back to 1847 when Alojz von Kriehuber, the nobleman of Melje Castle, began cultivating vineyards and built the wine cellar for this purpose. Our vineyards are spread throughout the Maribor region, currently covering over 50 hectares. The average vine age is 20 years, planted on marl and clay soils. The cultivated grape varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Yellow Muscat, Gewürztraminer, Rhine Riesling, Welschriesling, Pinot Noir, along with smaller amounts of Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau. The cellar’s capacity exceeds 500,000 liters.

Chardonnay Sparkling Wine

Brilliant golden-yellow color with numerous fine and fairly persistent bubbles.

The aroma is intense, revealing all the charm of Chardonnay made using the traditional method. Ripe yellow apples, a hint of tropical fruit, and candied lemon are present. This is followed by notes of almond blossom, intertwined with buttery tones, vanilla cream, and hints of shortcrust pastry and the soft heart of bread.

This is a very dry sparkling wine with noticeable softness, pronounced freshness, and almost salty minerality. Numerous bubbles fill the mouth with a creamy texture. It is a fairly full-bodied sparkling wine with an intense, elegant, and persistent aftertaste, reflecting citrus and fruity notes that blend with touches of cream and marzipan.
