Vinag 1847
We are a historic wine cellar in the heart of Maribor, stretching over more than 2 kilometers beneath the city. We are also one of the largest and oldest traditional wine cellars in Europe. Our mission is to preserve and maintain the rich tradition of viticulture, winemaking, and trade, continuing the story that began long ago. Guided tours and tastings of premium wines are available daily. Our winemaking tradition dates back to 1847 when Alojz von Kriehuber, the nobleman of Melje Castle, began cultivating vineyards and built the wine cellar for this purpose. Our vineyards are spread throughout the Maribor region, currently covering over 50 hectares. The average vine age is 20 years, planted on marl and clay soils. The cultivated grape varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Yellow Muscat, Gewürztraminer, Rhine Riesling, Welschriesling, Pinot Noir, along with smaller amounts of Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau. The cellar’s capacity exceeds 500,000 liters.
